Located just a few blocks from the heart of downtown, 300 First occupies the main floor of a former grocery warehouse from the turn of the century. The atmosphere is hip, stylish and inviting with red neon warming the original brick walls featuring copper accents. Seating is mostly in large booths (with comfortable, thick cushions and table tops with inlaid copper). The fireplace room also offers a cozy gathering spot.

A comfortable rustic, yet cosmopolitan atmosphere is the setting of The City Café. Exposed brick walls, accented with 100 year old Australian Jarrah wood wainscoting, envelop the warm glow of candle lit tables. Old school house lights and 1940’s wall sconces flood the dining room with warm soft light reminiscent of a soothing fireplace. The rich antique oak floor, which is mostly quarter sawn, is made from reclaimed wood that was once used for pickle barrels. The bar, topped with antique eucalyptus wood, offers a casual spot to sip a martini or a cold draft import while enjoying the whimsical original mural, which spans the back wall.

In 1856, just two years after Mantorville was incorporated, John Hubble rebuilt his original rustic hotel to accommodate a new influx of travelers. These days – although guests may no longer let rooms – the historic property still manages to attract a fair number of tourists each season, thanks to its reputation for fine food. Dining rooms are decorated much as they were in stagecoach days, making for cozy environs in which to enjoy a lunch of Maryland crab cakes, a Portobello club, or a ½-pound Hubble Hamburger.

Known for its elegant atmosphere and top-notch service, Michael's has enjoyed a privileged place on Rochester's restaurant scene since 1951. Inside, the walls are hung with scores of original paintings – some done by local artists, and all for sale. Roast Long Island Duckling over wild rice, Caramelized New Bedford Scallops in balsamic vinaigrette, and Garides Tourkolomino (Gulf shrimp with feta cheese and spinach manestra) earn particular praise from the regular crowd.

Stairs from the street entrance take you down into the lower level of the old grocery warehouse-turned bistro/coffeehouse. Here—over a Scotch or an American brewpub beer or an Irish coffee—you can sit at one of the cozy tables and bask in the wainscoting-and-wood furniture decor while (on most nights) listening to live jazz or blues. It is, in a word, sophisticated.
